What does Geometry coursework entail?

A class in geometry provides you with a great deal of useful information, and puts labels on ideas and principles that you use every day, maybe without even knowing it. Some of the general topics covered in a typical geometry class are basic geometric figures, deductive reasoning, parallel lines and planes, congruent triangles, quadrilaterals, inequalities of geometry, and polygons. One of the most foundational concepts to be covered by a solid course in geometry is the concept of the point. Here are three defining variations of a point:

The Dot:

A dot has a definite, measurable, length and width, which varies according to the size of the dot.

The Exact Location:

Sometimes associated with a zero-dimensional point (a point with no measurable length or width), the exact location needs to be decided upon for use in some purpose, such as mapping the size of a city. Since there is always another point between two other points, no matter how close together they are, the exact location can always be more precise.

The Ordered Pair:

Used to locate the exact position of a point on a graph, the first number represents the location on the x-axis, the second number represents the location on the y-axis, and both together tell you where to look to find the location.

The point is a foundational concept to all other geometry that you might learn in a class. Other concepts you will cover are Theorems, Postulates, and Angles; Deductive Reasoning; Planning a Proof; Applying Parallel Lines to Polygons; Parallelograms; Inequalities in Triangles; and Special Quadrilaterals.

Why Study Geometry?

Geometry helps to build logic skills and analytical thinking. An awareness of geometric principles can help you in design, construction, engineering, higher forms of math, and more. Some occupations rely very heavily on basic geometric theories. Trades like cabinetry, furniture making, or carpentry use geometry every day in very practical ways. A firm foundation in geometry can help you appreciate art, science, and even certain aspects of literature.

Career and Salary Outlook with a focus on Geometry

One of the most obvious occupations requiring a solid understanding of geometry is that of Civil Engineering. As a civil engineer, you would design and build roads, buildings, waterways, bridges and more. Employment in the field of civil engineering is growing, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Average annual salaries for civil engineers in 2004 were about 43K for people with bachelor's degrees in engineering.
