According to the National Education Association (www.nea.org), more South Carolina students are getting high scores on the SAT exams. The number of high Verbal SAT scores has increased 38% since 1994; the number of high Math SAT scores has increased 73% in that same time. (High scores are defined as those of 600 or above).
South Carolina High School Graduation Minimum Requirements
In order for a student to graduate from high school in the state of North Carolina, the Department of Education has established a curriculum as follows:
- English/Language Arts: 4 credits
- Mathematics: 4
- Science: 3
- U.S. History and Constitution: 1
- Economics: 0.5
- U.S. Government: 0.5
- Other Social Studies: 1
- Physical Education (or Junior ROTC as a substitute): 1
- Computer Science (includes keyboarding): 1
- Foreign Language or Career Education: 1
- Electives: 7
In addition, students must demonstrate computer literacy before graduation. Each student must also pass the South Carolina Exit Examination prior to graduation.
South Carolina College Admission Requirements
- 4 or more credits English (emphasis on composition and usage)
- 2 credits foreign language (both credits must be earned in the same language)
- 3 credits mathematics (including algebra and geometry)
- 2 credits laboratory sciences (including biology, physics, or chemistry)
- 1 credit US or world history
- 2 credits other social science
- 1 credit elective
- The Admission Interview
