General Information About CUNY Queens College

Queens College opened in 1937, and originally offered free education. It became part of the CUNY (City University of New York) system in 1961. Today the school is home to more than 20,000 students from over 130 countries.

CUNY Queens College is the only CUNY college to participate in Division II sports. It is accredited by the State of New York and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

Admissions and Enrollment Information:

CUNY Queens College accepts admission applications from new and transfer students. Admission is generally based on the applicant's background, including SAT or ACT scores. The undergraduate admissions process is largely online, and is coordinated through the CUNY system. Graduate applicants apply directly to Queens College.

Division of Arts and Humanities

Undergraduates interested in culture and language can study linguistics and communication disorders, foreign languages, literature, cultural studies and English. Those with creative interests can choose from art, film and media and the performing arts. This division is also home to the school of music; courses are available for students with no prior music training.

Division of Education

Undergraduates can jointly earn a bachelor's degree and teaching certification in elementary and secondary education. Graduate students with a bachelor's degree in education can earn a Master of Science in Education (MSEd). Those with non-education backgrounds can earn a Master of Arts in Teaching or secondary education certification. Master's degrees are also available in counselor education, literacy education, administration and supervision, school psychology and special education.

Division of Mathematics and the Natural Sciences

This division offers programs in earth and environmental science, chemistry, mathematics, computer science and physics. Students interested in behavioral and health sciences can study family and consumer sciences, psychology, nutritional science and physical education. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are available. Doctoral programs are offered in partnership with the CUNY Graduate Center.

Division of Social Sciences

The division of social sciences includes programs in anthropology, history, philosophy, journalism, political science and sociology. Students with cultural interests can choose from urban studies, women's studies and several ethnic studies. Entrepreneurial students can study economics, accounting and business. The division also offers a Master of Library Science; the program has full accreditation from the American Library Association.
