School Information about Central Michigan University

Central Michigan University (CMU) sits on 480 acres in Mount Pleasant. CMU is the fourth largest of Michigan's 15 public universities. CMU has 16 NCAA Division sports teams. They are men's baseball, basketball, cross country, football and wrestling and women's cross country, field hockey, softball, soccer, gymnastics and volleyball.

CMU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Roughly, 27,354 students attend CMU schools or affiliates. Of those students, 7,108 students are strictly online.

Admissions and Enrollment Information

Every year over 16,000 applications are submitted to CMU, but only 3,700 are accepted. The admissions office considers applicants based on academic history. Some of the qualifications considered are GPAs, ACT scores, high school courses, extra-curricular activities, leadership activities and work and volunteer experience. The average GPA of accepted applicants is 3.3.

Colleges and Schools of Central Michigan University

College of Business Administration (CBA)

CBA offers programs in accounting, business information systems, economics and finance and law. It also has programs in entrepreneurship, hospitality and marketing and management. Programs are available at the undergraduate and graduate levels, either online or on-campus. Graduate programs include MBA, master's in information systems and master in economics. Students receive hands-on training and have the opportunity to complete internships.

College of Communication and Fine Arts (CCFA)

The School of Music, the Department of Art, the School of Broadcast, the Department of Journalism and the Department of Communication and Dramatic Arts are all part of the CCFA. There are 1,800 students enrolled in programs through the five departments. The college hosts art and photography exhibitions, theater productions and various concerts.

College of Education and Human Services (EHS)

EHS consists of five departments: special ed and counseling, educational leadership, teacher education, recreation and parks and human environmental studies. The apparel design and merchandising program has unique equipment, such as a 3D body scanner, a system for infrared imaging and an environmental chamber, for student use. There are also a CAD lab, apparel production and textile testing labs, a motion capture room, a geowall and multimedia and data mining labs on campus available for use by various departments.

College of Health Professions (CHP)

The College of Health Professions offers undergraduate majors and minors and graduate programs. Doctorate programs are available in audiology, health administration and physical therapy. Departments within the college are communication disorders, physical education and sport, physical therapy, physician assistant and health sciences. CHP has a residential college where students in health-related programs can live, interact, study and take courses together. It is a community concentrating on the development of leadership, volunteer service, community building and academics.

College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences (CHSBS)

CHSBS is CMU largest college. There are over 200 instructors throughout the eight departments. The college has a study abroad program for all students regardless of major. Students taking a degree in political science may have the opportunity to take a government internship. In addition, anthropology students receive instruction in a hands-on lab and the chance to work at an archaeological site in Bolivia or Peru.

College of Science and Technology (CST)

Students enrolled in the CST can choose from 12 graduate and 50 undergraduate programs offered through eight departments. Besides taking classes, students may participate in lab and field experiences. Undergraduate students have a chance to conduct research and present their findings, In addition, disciplines like information technology and environmental studies include internships. CST has a residential college as well.

School of Medicine

CMU is in the process of establishing a School of Medicine. The first class is scheduled for 2012.

Central Michigan University Off-campus

There are 60 locations across the United States, Canada and Mexico that over 5,000 students are admitted to each year. The off-campus program provides CMU's degrees to students that attend classes at one of the other campuses across North America. An off-campus education is flexible and perfect for a working student. Terms are compressed into six to eight weeks. Classes meet in the evenings or on alternate weekends, allowing students time to work and be with families.

In a program called the cohort format, students form a group. This group follows a set schedule together through the entirety of their education. Academic advising for undergraduates helps students with writing and mathematics. Students of off-campus study take programs in sports administration, human resources, health services administration and community development.

Central Michigan University Online

Students that wish to receive a CMU degree can also do on-line study. Courses and entire programs are taught online. Bachelor's offered include Bachelor of Applied Science, Bachelor of Science in Administration and Bachelor of Science in Community Development.

A Doctorate of Health Administration is also offered. For the doctorate, courses are held in modules followed by a two and a half-day seminar worth one credit each. Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration and Master of Science degrees are also offered through the CMU online program.

CMU provides an online bookstore for both off-campus and online students. CMU uses e-books to provide students with a cost-effective choice.

Central Michigan University for the Military

With 22 military locations, 8-week terms and year-round classes, CMU has a program for military personnel and spouses. For active duty, guard, reserve, retired military and spouses, there is a tuition discount providing an education at a reduced cost.

CMU's military program is in partnership with Gatlin Education Services offering professional and career development certificate programs. Certificate programs given are in healthcare, business, IT, media, skilled trades and sustainable energy. Certificates as a wedding planner, casino black jack dealer, travel agent, forensic computer examiner and dental assistant are also available.

Central Michigan University Mount Pleasant Campus

Opening as the Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute in 1892, the school has since been renamed and is CMU main campus. CMU is the only college in Michigan to offer a program in meteorology and the only college in the nation to offer a bachelor's in biology concentrating in microscopy (biological microscopist).

The inventors club at CMU is one of only two in Michigan. Over 70% of CMU students do volunteer work. Advertising, law and economics, statistics, sociology, women's studies and chemistry are only a few of the degree programs at CMU.
