Johnson & Wales University is located in Providence, Rhode Island, with additional campuses in North Miami, Florida; Denver, Colorado; and Charlotte, North Carolina. Degree programs are offered in subject areas such as business, culinary arts, technology and hospitality.
General Information About Johnson & Wales University
Johnson & Wales University (JWU) opened in 1914 in Providence, Rhode Island, as a business school. Today, it is a multi-campus university offering career-focused degree programs in subjects such as culinary arts, hospitality and technology. JWU began expanding its physical presence across the country in 1992 when its North Miami, Florida, campus opened. A campus in Denver, Colorado, opened in 2000 and one in Charlotte, North Carolina, opened in 2004.
Integral to Johnson & Wales University's mission is the incorporation of community service with its educational programs. As a result, Johnson & Wales University is one of the 81 colleges recognized by the Princeton Review College Guide's Colleges with a Conscience edition.
Admissions and Enrollment Information
Undergraduates who wish to apply for admission to JWU submit an application and required transcripts and test scores. No application fee is charged and admissions are on a rolling basis. Each campus of JWU has its own residential and financial aid office. Undergraduate students apply directly to the JWU campus in which they plan to study. Tuition is the same at each campus. Graduate programs are offered only at the Providence campus.
Colleges and Schools of Johnson & Wales University
School of Arts & Sciences
The College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) houses the general education portion of JWU degree programs but does not offer any degree programs of its own. JWU estimates that students take about one-third of their courses from CAS. The university's honors program is managed through this school.
College of Business
General business undergraduate degree programs in finance, marketing, accounting, retail and management are offered by JWU's College of Business. Graduate programs include a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and advanced graduate business certificates. JWU's criminal justice program, which is available at the Providence, North Miami and Denver campuses, is administered through the School of Business.
Specialized business degree programs are available at individual campuses. For example, an equine business management degree program is available at the Providence campus and a management accounting program is available only at the Charlotte campus.
College of Culinary Arts
In 1973, JWU's College of Culinary Arts began offering associate's and bachelor's degrees in subjects such as culinary arts, nutrition, baking and pastry arts. Programs in baking and pastry management and food service management may be completed online. Students with culinary industry experience may be awarded credit for experience to accelerate their degree program.
JWU's Providence campus hosts the Culinary Arts Museum. The museum exhibits documents and items related to the history of food preparation and dining. Culinary students have opportunities to become involved in museum events.
The Hospitality College
Degree programs offered by the Hospitality College include travel agent certificates and bachelor's degree programs in lodging management, restaurant management and event management. A graduate business administration program in hospitality can be completed with a concentration in event leadership or marketing. Students have the opportunity to study abroad in South America, Asia, Europe and Africa.
JWU's North Miami campus offers a sports and event management degree program with a golf management concentration. This program is for students who want to learn to manage golf-related businesses while improving their swing.
School of Technology
The School of Technology degree programs are available only at Johnson & Wales' Providence campus. Associate degree programs are offered in drafting, computer programming, technology services and robotic engineering. Seven bachelor's degree programs offered include engineering, software engineering and graphic design. Students enrolled in School of Technology degree programs may concentrate in specialized technology areas such as game design or web applications by taking 13.5 credits in the specialized subject.
School of Education
JWU's School of Education offers graduate programs in education such as the Master of Arts in Teaching, which is a teacher preparation degree. The Master of Education degree in Teaching and Learning is for current teachers who want to further develop their teaching and leadership skills. The Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership program can be focused on teaching students in K-12 or teaching in postsecondary schools.
The Alan Shawn Feinstein Graduate School
Graduate programs in business and education are managed through the Alan Shawn Feinstein Graduate School at JWU's Providence campus. These programs include a Master of Business Administration in Global Business Leadership and Hospitality. Graduate certificates are offered in finance, hospitality and human resources.
