Lamar University Admissions and General School Information

Lamar University is a comprehensive public institution located in Beaumont, Texas, which is approximately 90 miles east of Houston and 25 miles west of Louisiana. The university offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs within five academic colleges.

General Information about Lamar University

Founded in 1923 as South Park Junior College, Lamar University later became a member of the Texas State University System. The university serves an annual enrollment of over 13,000 students with 63 undergraduate, 47 master's and nine doctoral degree programs.

Lamar University's 270-acre campus is home to more than a dozen NCAA Division I athletic teams including golf, tennis, basketball and baseball. The school is planning to reinstate a football program in 2010.

Admissions and Enrollment Information

Prospective students are required to complete an application for admission, accompanied by SAT or ACT scores and official high school transcripts. Lamar University welcomes applications from both first-time freshman and transfer students, the latter of which must provide their up-to-date college records for consideration.

Lamar University's Academic Colleges

College of Arts and Sciences

The College of Arts and Sciences is home to 11 academic departments including English, biology, computer science, history, psychology, social work and mathematics. Students are required to complete a core group of general education classes in addition to coursework within their field. Bachelor's and master's programs are available.

College of Business

The College of Business is home to undergraduate programs in accounting and business law, information systems and analysis, economics and finance, management and marketing, and general business. The college also offers an accredited MBA program. Part-time and full-time options are available.

College of Education and Human Development

This college includes the following academic departments: family and consumer science, health and kinesiology, educational leadership, professional pedagogy and professional services. The education preparation program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teachers Education and the State Board of Educator Certification. Other academic majors include nutrition, community counseling, interior design, fashion and hospitality.

College of Engineering

Lamar University's College of Engineering offers bachelor's and master's degrees in a variety of concentrations, and five Doctor of Engineering options. A Ph.D. program in chemical engineering is also available. The college's five academic departments are: electrical engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, industrial engineering and mechanical engineering. Enrollment at the college averages over 1,100 students annually.

College of Fine Arts and Communication

Comprised of five academic departments, the College of Fine Arts and Communication offers 15 undergraduate programs and eight graduate programs. Students can choose to pursue degrees in the areas of art, communication, speech and hearing sciences, deaf studies and deaf education, music, theater or dance.
