General Information about Northwestern College

Founded in 1902 by J.F. Fish, the Northwestern College philosophy is based on preparing students for immediate employment in specialized fields of study upon graduation to meet business needs.

The school has up-to-date programs and instructors with real-world field experience. It also offers lifetime career guidance at its Office of Career Development. Flexible day, evening, weekend and online classes are available. Students may enroll in one or more classes at a time with the possibility of graduating in as little as one year.

Admissions and Enrollment Information

To enroll at Northwestern College, prospective students can apply online, print an application to send in the mail or call or chat online with a Northwestern admissions representative who will guide them through the process and answer any questions. Personal visits can also be scheduled by phone or online. Candidates must be a high school graduate or hold a GED equivalency diploma; they must also pass a placement exam and complete a personal interview, among other requirements. Transfer credit may be accepted for classes taken at an accredited college or university that meets Northwestern's requirements.

Business

Northwestern College offers a business certificate program, as well as a business administration program leading to an Associate in Applied Science. The certificate program is intended for practicing business professionals seeking to upgrade their skills. Students study computer applications, advertising and economics. Those pursuing the associate's degree may select a concentration in investment and finance management, entrepreneurship or management.

Computer

Northwestern College offers Associate in Applied Science programs in information management systems and health information technology. Candidates for an information management systems degree learn fundamental skills in presentation and spreadsheet applications, development of enterprise database programs and Web pages, designing and installation of Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs) and securitization to prevent unauthorized activity in Windows and IINUX platforms. The health information technology program educates students on how to organize and evaluate medical records, code patient records, clarify diagnoses and treatment with physicians and analyze and tabulate data on computer programs related to the field.

Legal

Programs offered at Northwestern College in the legal field award an Associate in Applied Science in criminal justice or paralegal studies. The criminal justice program exceeds the minimum requirements for the Illinois State and Chicago Police Departments. Students learn how to work appropriately within the legal system when identifying and intervening in possible criminal situations. They also develop effective behavioral, oral, written, non-verbal and problem-solving skills. Paralegal students learn to prepare pleadings and litigation-related documents, as well as study research in legal issues and ethical behavior. Emphasis is placed on the development of written communication, legal data and computer skills. One can also earn a paralegal certificate .

Healthcare

Northwestern College offers several healthcare certificate programs, as well as programs leading to an Associate of Science; degree programs include massage therapy, medical assisting and health information technology. Certificate-seeking students can train to become coding specialists, health care billing specialists, massage therapists and pharmacy technicians. Both the degree and certificate programs prepare students on standard procedures, tests, computer applications, forms, and systems necessary to succeed in the field chosen.
