Radford University Admissions and General School Information

Named after the city of its location, Radford University is situated in southwestern Virginia's New River valley. The university offers bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in a wide range of science, liberal arts and health science fields.

General Information about Radford University

Founded in the early 20th century as a college for women, Radford University today enrolls over 9,100 students. This public, moderately sized university was named one of the country's 'top up-and-coming schools' by U.S. News & World Report.

Four of Radford University's six colleges are focused on liberal arts education, along with two other schools dedicated to graduate and health science education. Some of Radford's most popular majors include business, nursing, education, criminal justice and media studies. Popular, less traditional majors include recreation and tourism, fashion design and merchandising, interior design and music therapy.

Admissions and Enrollment Information

All prospective students must complete either a paper or online application and submit standardized test scores if required by their chosen major. All prospective freshmen must complete three full years of mathematics before being admitted to Radford University, and any student interested in pre-nursing must complete additional biology and chemistry courses.

Radford University Academic Colleges

College of Business and Economics

This division of Radford University offers undergraduate degrees in accounting, finance, economics, management and marketing; it also offers a Master of Business Administration program. In addition to career enhancement seminars, job fairs and other networking events for students, the business college also runs governmental and nonprofit assistance, small business development and leadership development centers.

College of Education and Human Development

Students enrolled in majors housed within this department pursue degrees in counselor education, exercise and health education, as well as teacher leadership and teacher licensure education. In all, 31 fields of study are available within the College of Education and Human Development.

Waldron College of Health and Human Services

Undergraduate fields of study in the College of Health and Human Services include community sciences and disorders, foods and nutrition, recreation and tourism and occupational therapy. Also housed within the college are the School of Nursing, which recently began a nursing doctorate program, and the School of Social Work, which offers programs focused on assisting the underserved populations of rural Appalachia.

College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences

One of Radford University's largest divisions is the College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences, which claims more than 2,000 students in eight departments along with a School of Communications. The college's long list of departmental majors includes Appalachian studies, criminal justice, foreign language, military science, religious studies, political science and anthropology.

College of Science and Technology

Radford University's lone non-liberal arts college offers majors in biology, medical technology, chemistry, math, physics and pre-medical training. The College of Science and Technology also houses the university's Honors Academy, which encourages more rigorous academic achievement through collaboration and research.

College of Visual and Performing Arts

Students majoring in fields within the College of Visual and Performing Arts pursue studies of art, dance, interior design, fashion, music and theatre. The college is also home to Radford University's art museum, which displays student and alumni works, as well as the collections of regional and national artists.

College of Graduate and Professional Studies

Graduate and professional programs that have corresponding undergraduate majors are housed within this college. Master's and doctorate degrees are available in specialties including speech and language pathology, school counseling, education, literacy, occupational and physical therapy, social work and special education.
