Saginaw Valley State University General Information

Saginaw Valley State University takes its name from Michigan's Saginaw Valley region, where it was established in 1963. The school student-to-faculty ratio is 19:1 for its student population of 9,837.

Saginaw Valley State is the youngest public university in Michigan. With a motto of 'something more, something better,' SVSU bears red and blue as its school colors.

Admissions and Enrollment Information

Undergraduate applicants can apply by completing an online or paper application and paying a nonrefundable fee. First-time applicants also submit copies of ACT or SAT scores and high school transcripts. Transfer students must submit transcripts from each post-secondary school attended.

International applicants must submit Test of English as a Foreign Language scores. Currently, Saginaw State University requires a TOEFL score of 500 on the paper test, 173 on the computer exam or 61 on the Internet version. International applicants who fail to meet the minimum score can be admitted conditionally, but they must take English language instruction during orientation.

Colleges of Saginaw State University

College of Arts and Behavioral Sciences

Since 1963, the College of Arts and Sciences has offered degrees in English, philosophy, history, gender studies and many other areas. The Department of Art offers undergraduate programs in visual arts education, graphic design and art. Students with a major in graphic design are encouraged to minor in marketing, communication or general business. While completing the degree, students take classes in drawing, digital imaging and graphic design.

College of Business and Management

College of Business and Management undergraduate degree programs include management, economics, accounting and finance. Internships are central to the undergraduate business degree programs. The College of Business and Management creates internship opportunities with local firms, from family businesses to Fortune 500 companies. The college also sponsors the Boutell Citizen's Luncheon Program where students can network with local business leaders.

College of Education

The College of Education teaches special education, secondary education and elementary education. The College of Education also incorporates the Regional Education Resource Center and Regional Math and Science Center. The Regional Education Resource Center helps students and faculty bring technology into lesson plans. The center is also an education library and houses a collection that includes children's literature, curriculum kits and English as a second language resources.

Crystal M. Lange College of Health and Human Sciences

College of Health and Human Sciences programs include nursing, social work, health science, kinesiology and occupational therapy. The college houses a Clinical Simulation and Learning Resources Laboratory. In the laboratory, students can learn about the latest equipment used by health service professionals. The lab gives students a hands-on way to develop safe health care practice habits.

College of Science, Engineering and Technology

College of Science, Engineering and Technology programs include agriculture, mathematics, chemistry and physics, among other fields. The college also houses the Independent Testing Laboratory (ITL). Founded in 1982, ITL has partnered with a number of local manufacturing companies to reduce costs while increasing productivity by offering a key number of services. Some of the services offered by ITL include microscopy, chemical testing, physical testing and biological testing. All testing procedures used by ITL follow American Society of Testing Materials standards.
