Savannah College of Art and Design has three campus locations, but the main campuses are located in Savannah and Atlanta, GA. It also has a study abroad campus in Lacoste, France and there are plans for a campus in Hong Kong. The school offers arts training in 40 bachelor and master degree programs in fields like architecture, fine arts, design, fashion performance, multi-media and film.

General Information about Savannah College (SCAD)

In addition to being the largest art school in the south, Savannah College of Art and Design is one of the largest art schools in the nation boasting of a student enrollment nearing 12,000. But this has its benefits, four diverse campuses, and something that most other art schools don't have: an athletics division that competes regularly in the NCAA games in soccer, golf, cross country, tennis and volleyball.

Admission and Enrollment Information

Prospective undergraduate students applicants need to write an essay, and provide test scores and transcripts from their previous learning institutions. Undergraduate prospective students don't require a portfolio or an audition to be considered for admission to SCAD, however students who apply with a portfolio will be considered for scholarships and possible institutional grants. Graduate application requirements vary according to the department, typically a successful candidate will have strong educational records, as well as a writing sample and portfolio of work in their field. Students who need to audition will have a chance to meet with a representative on one of SCAD's national visitation days.

Savannah College of Art and Design's Academic Departments

The School of Fundamentals at SCAD offers elementary training in the arts necessary for any major at the school. Students must finish required courses in fundamentals before they enroll in higher-level classes. Introductory lessons introduce concepts in figure drawing, sculpture and basic 4-d media, as well as classic techniques with oil and watercolor paints. Studio classes are supplemented with art history classes. Assignments are critiqued in the classroom and students are introduced to various critical terms, movements and ideas in art.

School of Communication Arts

SCAD's design management program in the School of Communication Arts has recently been listed in the top 30 best design programs in 'Business Week' (www.businessweek.com). The unique program focuses on developing necessary skills to lead, thrive and grow as a design professional.

School of Fashion

The fashion school offers four majors: fashion design, accessory design, fashion marketing and management, luxury and fashion management and minors in menswear or management. One of the biggest events in Savannah is the annual fashion show in the beginning of May, which showcases thesis designs from graduating seniors.

School of Film, Digital Media and Performing Arts

As one of the largest schools at SCAD, the School of Film, Digital Media and Performing Arts provides instruction in animation, film, television and the performing arts. Majors include set design, special effects, motion media and dramatic writing.

School of Fine Arts

The school offers training in majors typically associated with art school like drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and printmaking. Students have a chance to experience a taste of the professional art world though exhibits in local galleries and student galleries at the school.

School of Liberal Arts

Offering students a liberal arts education while in art school is a relatively new idea.

SCAD pushes its students to develop their skills in the arts while providing them with the necessary education in critical theory, art history, writing and cinema studies. Majors in liberal arts can go on to become art critics, teachers, museum educators or art administrators.
