Sonoma State University Admissions and General School Information

Sonoma State University, located about 50 miles north of San Francisco, offers 45 majors and 48 minors in its bachelor's degree program. 16 master's level degree programs are also available at its six schools.

Sonoma State University Information

Located on 269 acres in California's premier wine country, Sonoma State University opened in 1961 and expanded its master academic plan in years to follow. The school has approximately 8,900 students, with about 3,000 residing on its mid-size campus.

Sonoma State offers nine credential, eight certificate, 45 bachelor's degree and 16 master's degree programs. Its top ten majors include business, communications, psychology, pre-nursing, Hutchins liberal studies, English, criminal justice, history, biology and kinesiology. SSU also sponsors five sports for men and eight sports for women, and it houses a 59,000 square foot Recreation Center with exercise and dance studios, a weight lifting and machine area, aerobic equipment, two gyms, a climbing wall, locker rooms and a spa.

Admissions and Enrollment information

Sonoma State University uses the Basic California State University Admission Requirements to select its students. To be considered for admission, undergraduate applications must be completed with applicants' first-choice campuses. SAT1 or ACT test scores, grade point averages and high-school course preparation are also considerations for admission. Students accepted to SSU school attend a two-day summer orientation program to learn about college life and curriculum, meet with their program's faculty and become familiar with their fall schedule of classes.

Schools of Sonoma State University

School of Arts & Humanities

The School of Arts and Humanities at SSU includes art programs in art, creative writing, applied arts, music and theatre arts. Humanities programs are offered in modern languages and literatures, American multicultural studies, English, California cultural studies, communications, philosophy, Native American studies and Chicano Latino studies. Elementary school teaching credential programs are offered by Hutchins School of Liberal Studies and by the Chicano Latino studies program. This school also oversees Sonoma State University's Center for Performing arts which sponsors music and theatre arts productions and guest artists and events.

School of Business & Economics

Sonoma State University's School of Business and Economics offers degree programs with an emphasis on critical analysis, problem solving, creativity and communication. Candidates seeking Bachelor of Science degrees in Business Administration choose from concentrations in accounting, finance, financial management, management, marketing or wine business. Business professionals are offered a part-time evening MBA program focusing on general management and entrepreneurial skills. The BA degree program in Economics offers students options in city and regional planning, business economics, finance, computer applications, marketing and international economics. Graduate studies are also offered in several concentrations.

School of Education

Sonoma State University's School of Education offers single-subject credential, early childhood education minor, and master's degree in education options. The single-subject credential program is designed for candidates teaching in middle and high schools. This program's goals for its students are to develop the skills and knowledge they need to be effective teachers and to establish the understanding and attitudes to continue through their careers. The early childhood education minor prepares students for care and education of children from birth to age eight in fields such as counseling, nursing, psychology, education and social work. The master's degree in education program is also available from the school of extended education.

School of Extended Education

Sonoma State University's School of Extended Education offers certificate and degree programs to its students. Masters degree-seeking candidates have choices including depth psychology, organization psychology, action for a viable future, computer engineering, social work or Spanish. Two Bachelor's of Liberal Studies programs are available in this school, as well as certificate programs including management and supervision, child and infant mental health, construction management, conflict resolution, green building, human resource management, paralegal, post-MA family nurse, sustainable landscape, testing room management and TESOL.

School of Science & Technology

Sonoma State's School of Science and Technology offers undergraduate programs in biology, chemistry, physics and astronomy, computer science, engineering science, kinesiology, mathematics, geology and nursing. Graduate programs are available in computer and engineering science, biology, kinesiology and nursing. The school's curriculum helps students planning careers in these areas, as well as general education courses beneficial to students in other schools at SSU. Research, clinical studies, assistantships and new laboratories help students learn practical skills in their areas of concentration.

School of Social Sciences

Sonoma State University's School of Social Sciences houses 15 academic departments offering several options in minor, bachelor's and master's degree programs. Students can choose from traditional social science fields with an emphasis in history, anthropology, geography, political science, psychology and sociology. There are also combined discipline program offerings in gerontology, human development, environmental studies and planning, linguistics, and women's studies. Professional emphasis programs are offered in teaching English as a second language, counseling, criminal justice administration and public administration.
