Southern Illinois University Admissions and School Information

Southern Illinois University's main campus is in Carbondale, Illinois, with a second campus located in Edwardsville, IL and three other centers located across the state. Students can pursue associate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in a variety of areas, including agriculture, art, education, journalism, music and radio-television. Professional programs in law and medicine are also offered.

About Southern Illinois University

Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale was formed in 1869 as a small teaching college, but has grown to be one of the most comprehensive public universities in the state. Carbondale has expanded to include a School of Medicine in Springfield and an additional campus has been established in Edwardsville, which includes a School of Dental Medicine in Alton along with a center in East St. Louis. SIU is nationally recognized and was ranked one of the Best Value Colleges as well as Best Midwestern Universities by the U.S. by the Princeton Review.

Altogether, the school has nearly 35,000 students and offers a wide variety of degree programs, which includes 124 bachelor's, 113 master's and 37 doctoral and professional programs as well as two associate degrees. With nine different academic departments available at Carbondale, students can pursue degrees in aviation, automotive technology, business, history, political science and social work.

Southern Illinois University strongly encourages prospective students to get a feel for the Carbondale campus, which is why they offer open houses and individual and group visits. Applications for enrollment to Southern Illinois University can be submitted online or downloaded to print and mail. The application form is fairly standard and must be accompanied by an application fee.

Southern Illinois Academic Departments

College of Agricultural Sciences

SIU's College of Agricultural Sciences is comprised of 26 different academic units, including agricultural systems, forestry, hospitality and tourism, plant and human nutrition and dietetics. Master degree programs are also available in agribusiness economics, animal science and plant and soil science with a doctoral program offered in agricultural sciences.

College of Applied Sciences & Arts

The College of Applied Sciences & Arts within Southern Illinois University offers a range of 25 different degree options, including automotive technology, dental hygiene, interior design, radiologic sciences and mortuary science and funeral service. One of only two associate's degree programs offered by SIU is available in aviation flight through the College of Applied Sciences and Arts. A Master of Architecture program is also available.

College of Business

The College of Business at SIU offers degree programs in accounting, business administration, business economics, finance, management and marketing. Several master's degree programs are also available through the College of Business, including accountancy and business administration. A doctoral program in business administration is also offered.

College of Education & Human Services

Southern Illinois University's College of Education & Human Services offers students several different areas of study to choose from, including art, athletic training, early childhood and health education. Bachelor's degree programs are available in rehabilitation services and communication disorders and sciences. Four master's degree programs are available, including rehabilitation counseling, rehabilitation administration and services, communication disorders and sciences and behavioral analysis and therapy. A Doctor of Philosophy in rehabilitation is also offered. Nearly 3,500 students have graduated from the College of Education and Human Services to pursue careers in schools, hospitals, public agencies and human service organizations.

College of Engineering

The College of Engineering at Southern Illinois University offers several different areas of undergraduate study, including environmental, geotechnical, structural, surveying, transportation and hydraulics and water resources. Bachelor degree programs include computer engineering, engineering technology, mining engineering, industrial technology, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. A Master of Science in civil engineering is available, as well as a doctoral program in engineering science.

College of Liberal Arts

The College of Liberal Arts is Southern Illinois University's largest college, offering more than 80 different areas of study, including criminal justice, design, philosophy, sociology, pre-law and theater. Master's degrees are available in theater, creative writing, administration of justice, applied linguistics, mass communication and media arts and art and design.

College of Mass Communication & Media Art

The College of Mass Communication & Media Art offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in several areas. Bachelor's degree programs include journalism, cinema and photography and radio and television. Master's degree programs include media theory and research and professional media and media management. Both master's and doctoral degree programs are offered in mass communication and media arts. This college also operates its own public broadcasts and participates in national film festivals.

College of Science

The College of Science at Southern Illinois University offers 26 different academic departments, including chemistry, geology, nursing, physics and zoology. An associate degree in physical therapy assisting is also available.

School of Medicine

The School of Medicine at Southern Illinois University was established in 1972 and offers a Medical/Dental Education Preparatory Program (MEDPREP) for educationally or economically disadvantaged students. MEDPREP is a 2-year postbaccalaureate program designed to help students improve their academic record and test-taking skills before continuing in their healthcare education. Assistance will also be provided to help prepare students for MCAT/DAT examinations.
