About Towson University

Towson University, located eight miles north of Baltimore, is Maryland's second-largest public university, and its largest producer of teachers. The university serves over 21,000 students and was ranked among the top ten best public master's institutions in the north by U.S. News and World Report.

Towson University offers 63 undergraduate majors, 39 master's programs and 4 doctoral degree options. The university's most popular majors are business administration, mass communication, nursing and elementary education. The university's gerontology program is only one of 100 undergraduate programs of its kind in the country.

Admissions and Enrollment Information

Based on its applicant pool and available space, the admissions process at Towson University is relatively competitive. Freshman applicants are evaluated based on their high school performance as demonstrated by both GPA and high school curriculum. Many applicants exceed minimum required coursework and have earned high scores on the SAT or ACT exam.

Towson University's Academic Colleges

College of Liberal Arts

The College of Liberal Arts provides degree programs in humanities and social sciences. Academic departments include geography and environmental planning, cultural studies, women's studies, political science, community development, foreign languages and English. As Towson University's largest college, it contributes a majority of the general education offerings at the university.

College of Business and Economics

Comprised of six departments, the College of Business and Economics offers undergraduate and graduate programs designed to prepare students for leadership positions in a variety professional and organization settings. The college is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International. Towson University is the only University of Maryland System institution to receive accreditation for its programs in business administration, accounting and e-commerce.

Jess and Mildred Fisher College of Science and Mathematics

This college offers undergraduate programs in computer and information systems, biology, mathematics, physics, chemistry and geosciences. Master of Science degrees are available in environmental science, science education, mathematics, computer science and biology. Students benefit from student-based research programs, as well as internship and co-op experiences.

College of Health Professions

The College of Health Professions offers educational programs that encompass a range of health and sport-related fields. Undergraduate programs include athletic training, exercise science, nursing, physical education and sports management. Graduate level programs include nursing, occupational therapy, audiology, kinesiology and speech-language pathology. Students are given both on- and off-campus learning opportunities through a variety of internship and clinical experiences.

College of Education

The College of Education is comprised of departments of education technology and literacy, instructional leadership and professional development, early childhood education, elementary education, secondary education and special education. The college is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Maryland State Department of Education.

College of Fine Arts and Communication

The College of Fine Arts and Communication offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in mass communication and communication studies, dance, art, electronic media, music and theatre arts. In addition to academic programs, the college contributes to the cultural life of the university by presenting events including lectures and workshops, performances, art exhibits and a daily campus television show. The college serves nearly 2,900 students each year.

Honors College

Towson University's Honors College provides challenging opportunities to outstanding academic achievers seeking intellectual growth. Students participate in small honors classes that encourage student involvement, open discussion and critical thinking. The Honors College enrolls approximately 700 students from across all academic colleges.
