General Information about Western Governors University

Western Governors University (WGU) is an exclusively on-line college that offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Utah governors decided that a college was needed that incorporated training in booming technology subjects while providing degree programs for working individuals and opened WGU in 1999.

WGU offers degrees to people who thrive in an independent and flexible environment. In fact most programs begin new courses at the beginning of each month to allow students to start whenever is most convenient for them. In addition, an on-line university provides an education while keeping tuition costs low. Average student age is 36, but the range goes from students in their 20's to their 60's. The ratio for women to men is almost 2:1, while 78% of students come from urban or suburban households.

Admissions and Enrollment Information

Prospective students must submit, along with his or her application, all official transcripts from previous schools and proof of specific professional certifications. There is currently no minimum GPA or SAT requirement, but students must have earned a high school diploma or GED. After being accepted, students have an intake interview with an enrollment counselor and take a Readiness Assessment test that evaluates a student's readiness to take college-level courses online.
