Western Kentucky University, one of the fastest-growing universities in the state, accounts for a third of Kentucky's increase in college enrollments. Located in south-central Kentucky in the city of Bowling Green, the school offers all levels of degrees from associate to doctorate.
About Western Kentucky University
Founded in 1908, Western Kentucky University began as a teacher training school. The evolution into the present-day university included a merger with several other local colleges, including a school for men and a business school. Today, Western Kentucky University enrolls nearly 20,000 students each year in programs in health and human services, science and engineering, arts and letters, business and education.
Western Kentucky University offers approximately 90 majors and 60 minors, in addition to pre-professional and professional options. It has been ranked a 'first tier' university by U.S. News & World Report and ranks 12th overall for best public graduate programs in the South.
Admissions and Enrollment Information for Western Kentucky University
In order to qualify for admission to Western Kentucky University, prospective freshmen must have completed 4 years of English; 3 years each of social studies, math and science; and 2 years of foreign language studies. A high school transcript and application fee are also required. Prospective graduate students must furnish transcripts from any previous college work, as well as meet specific departmental requirements.
Academic Colleges of Western Kentucky University
Gordon Ford College of Business
The Gordon Ford College of Business includes accounting, economics, management, finance, information systems, marketing and sales departments. In addition to offering bachelor's degrees in each of the aforementioned fields, the Gordon Ford College of Business also offers a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Master of Arts degree in Applied Economics.
College of Education & Behavioral Sciences
Students enrolled in Western Kentucky University's College of Education & Behavioral Sciences can pursue studies at undergraduate and graduate level in counseling, educational leadership, military science, psychology and teacher education departments. A Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership is the only doctoral degree conferred by the college.
Ogden College of Science & Engineering
Agriculture, manufacturing science, biology, chemistry, engineering, math and physics are among the focuses of departments housed by Ogden College of Science & Engineering. The college's Department of Architectural and Manufacturing Science is unique in offering vocation-style training through associate degree programs in architectural drafting and manufacturing technology, as well as bachelor's and master's degree programs in construction management, technical teacher education and technology management.
College of Health & Human Services
The College of Health & Human Services is the newest of Western Kentucky University's colleges. Undergraduate and graduate degree programs are available in fields including family science, allied health, communication disorders, kinesiology and recreation, nursing, public health and social work. Students must complete field or clinical coursework; the college is affiliated with various health and human services organizations, facilities and agencies.
Potter College of Arts & Letters
Western Kentucky University's largest academic division is the Potter College of Arts & Letters, which administers liberal arts programs including English, film studies, folk studies and anthropology, journalism and music. Other options include philosophy, religion and theatre. The college's 12 departments offer 27 majors, several interdisciplinary programs and a number of graduate degree programs.
