General Information about William Paterson University of New Jersey

Founded in 1855, William Paterson University of New Jersey started out as the Paterson City Normal School; a free public school for preparation of teachers-in-service. In 1936, the university began offering college courses along with teacher education.

Today, the William Paterson University of New Jersey features 31 major facilities and enrolls over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The college is located on 370-acres in Wayne, New Jersey, 20 miles from New York City. The university features 44 undergraduate and 22 graduate programs throughout five colleges.

Admissions and Enrollment Information

William Paterson University of New Jersey accepts first year students, transfer, second-degree and re-admit students. First Year students requirements include completing university application, as well as having official high school transcripts and SAT or ACT scores sent to admissions office. Transfer and other students must also present at least 12 college credits with a GPA of 2.0 or higher and have official transcripts from previous colleges.

College of the Arts and Communication

The College of the Arts and Communication is a combination of three departments including music, arts and communication. The college oversees the university galleries and the university performing arts, as well as the university radio station, television station and newspaper. Bachelor's degree programs feature areas of study such as computer design, graphic design, jazz studies, music education, journalism and interpersonal communications. Master's degrees in art, music and communications are also available. In addition, students can earn a collaborative master's in business administration with a music management concentration.

Cotsakos College of Business

Named for Christos M. Cotsakos, the Cotsakos College of Business offers bachelor's degree programs in professional sales, accounting and business administration. Also available is a master's degree in business administration with concentrations in accounting, entrepreneurship, finance and marketing. The college also features learning opportunities such as internships, job shadowing, practicum and mentoring programs through the college's professional enrichment program; a program that allows students to meet and network with specialists, attend seminars and participate in work-related activities.

College of Education

The College of Education offers bachelor's for early childhood education, elementary, specific subject fields, physical education, special education and music education. Master's degree programs are also provided for cirriculum and learning, reading and educational leadership. The college also features special teaching and learning programs; where students are offered student teaching opportunities in an urban setting, as well as special seminars, workshops and job interview possibilities.

College of Humanities and Social Sciences

The largest college at William Paterson University of New Jersey, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences features 11 departments and three interdisciplinary programs. The college offers many of the electives and required general education courses. Graduate students are offered master's programs in bilingual and English as a second language, English, history, psychology, applied sociology and political science. The college also features honors programs in cognitive science and humanities.

College of Science and Health

The College of Science and Health is home to the academic departments including communication disorders, computer science, nursing and public health. The college also has universities pre-professional and specialty programs, such as the Math and Science Teachers program; where students participate in a U.S. Department of Education project to increase competitiveness in Science and Mathematics. Additionally students can take part in faculty and student research at the Center for Research in the college.
