About Boston College

Boston College is a Jesuit Catholic school approximately six miles west of Boston. The college strives to promote academic achievement, community service and personal development. Students are encouraged to participate in volunteer experiences and athletics as parts of their educations. In 2007, more than 7,300 students were involved in collegiate or intramural sports at Boston College.

The total enrollment at Boston College is 14,623 students, including 4,843 graduate and professional students. There are 13 students for each faculty member, and 96% of the faculty have doctorates.

Admissions and Enrollment Information for Boston College

Boston College requires undergraduate applicants who have recently completed high school to submit SAT scores, including two subject area SAT II tests, or ACT scores with writing sections. Applicants must also provide two teacher recommendations and a recommendation from a counselor along with their high school transcript. For transfer students, the college evaluates applicants based on their high school and college records, SAT or ACT scores, recommendations and other relevant work and life experiences.

College of Arts and Sciences

College of Arts and Sciences students may choose from bachelor's degree programs in artistic fields, such as fine art, music and theater. Science students can major in biology, chemistry, computer science or physics. Students interested in the behavioral and social sciences may pursue studies of psychology, sociology and theology. The college also offers several language programs. Founded in 1863, it is the oldest and largest college on campus.

Graduate College of Arts and Sciences

The Graduate College of Arts and Sciences offers 23 master's degrees and 12 doctorate programs. Started in the 1920's, the college is now composed of 16 departments in the disciplines of social sciences, humanities and natural sciences. The Graduate College of Arts and Sciences promotes student research in each department and its 20 research centers and institutes.

Lynch School of Education

The Lynch School of Education opened in 1952 to prepare undergraduate and graduate students for work as teachers, administrators, psychologists and researchers. Bachelor's degree options include majors in human development or elementary, middle or secondary education. The Lynch School of Education offers 15 master's degree programs and six doctorate programs.

Boston College Law School

The Law School at Boston College offers a 3-year Juris Doctorate program and joint degree programs with the Carroll School of Management, Graduate School of Social Work and Lynch School of Education. The school was founded in 1929 and currently has one of the most selective applicant-to-acceptance ratios in the country. Students can participate in clinical programs to gain real experience practicing law through internships and supervised in-house legal clinics. The school encourages students to develop their advocacy skills through moot court, negotiation and client counseling competitions.

Carroll School of Management

At the Carroll School of Management, undergraduate students may earn bachelor's degrees in management. Graduate students can work towards master's degrees in finance, accounting or business administration. The school also offers management doctorate programs with emphases in finance or organization studies. The Carroll School of Management is home to eight centers where professionals can attend executive development courses. Since its inception in the 1930s, the school has strived to provide business training that is consistent with the school's ethics and values.

Connell School of Nursing

The Connell School of Nursing opened in 1947 with 35 students enrolled in its bachelor's degree program. The school now offers a B.S. of Nursing degree, an M.S. degree, post-master's degree certificates and a doctorate in nursing. Students interested in clinical research, health care leadership and religious applications of nursing can choose to participate in joint degree programs. These dual programs allow students to simultaneously earn research doctorate degrees or master's degrees in business or ministry.

Graduate School of Social Work

Students in the Graduate School of Social Work may work towards social work master's degrees focused on children and families, adults and families, health or global practice. The school offers dual degree programs for students to concurrently earn law degrees, MBAs or master's degrees in ministry. Founded in the 1930's, the modern Graduate School of Social Work now includes three institutes that provide research opportunities and resources for the larger social work community.

School of Theology and Ministry

Founded in 2008, the School of Theology and Ministry is the newest school at Boston College. Students can choose from five master's degree programs, a doctorate program or joint degrees in conjunction with other schools on campus. Church professionals may attend classes at the School of Theology and Ministry for professional development and to earn academic certificates. The Summer Institute is a 6-week program that draws students from around the world for intensive study.

Woods College of Advancing Studies

The Woods College of Advancing Studies offers a bachelor's degree and a master's degree for students interested in studying how administration and leadership can positively impact their careers. Advancing studies students create individualized courses of study to explore the humanities, social sciences, communications, social justice and other topics. The school's 2-year professional certificate programs offer non-degree options for students interested in topics in business and finance, communications, information technology, human resources and criminal justice.
