Eastern Illinois University General Information

Eastern Illinois University's student population of 12,000 primarily hails from the Chicago metro area; approximately 85% are undergraduate students. The school is ranked among U.S. News & World Report's top public, Midwestern universities, and has been selected as one of The Princeton Review's best Midwestern campuses.

The university, founded in 1895, originally conferred 2-year teaching degrees before expanding to include more than 25 graduate and 44 undergraduate majors. Despite its varied academic offerings, Eastern Illinois University maintains a 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio, with typical classes of no more than 20 students.

Admissions and Enrollment Information

Prospective undergraduates must submit SAT or ACT scores,high school transcripts, letters of recommendation and personal statements addressing academic goals at the university. Transfer students must have cumulative grade point averages of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale), with exceptions depending on the number of college credits previously earned. Students seeking graduate admission to Eastern Illinois University must submit a graduate application, college transcripts, appropriate test scores and, typically, a sample of academically relevant work.

Schools and Colleges at Eastern Illinois University

College of Arts and Humanities

Eastern Illinois University's College of Arts and Humanities houses 18 departments and interdisciplinary programs, including English, art, music, history, Asian studies, women's studies and film studies. The college generally enrolls 1,800 students and awards 450 degrees annually. Additionally, it offers an art studio and two arts centers, including the Doudna Fine Arts Center, an architectural landmark that hosts the annual Embarras Valley Film Festival.

College of Education and Professional Studies

Students in the College of Education and Professional Studies earn undergraduate, graduate and educational specialist degrees through eight departments, including counseling and development, secondary education, health studies and recreation administration. All of the college's teacher education programs are nationally accredited and incorporate student teaching experiences. The college's facilities include the Instruction Technology Center, which provides students cutting edge teaching technology and mobile audio and video carts.

College of Sciences

Eastern Illinois University's College of Sciences houses five social science and four natural science departments, as well as the computer science and math departments; it also administers the university's nursing program. The college actively involves students in faculty-led research projects that are presented at regional and national showcases and meetings. Students in the college may be able to earn scholarships and awards for academic accomplishments in social and natural sciences.

Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences

Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences is made up of the Schools of Business, Family and Consumer Science and Technology and the Department of Military Science. Each school offers internships and student-led organizations, which let students gain experience in their chosen field of study; this includes Pantera, an on-campus, student-run restaurant.

The Graduate School

More than 300 faculty members teach in Eastern Illinois University's Graduate School, which serves 1,800 full- and part-time students. The school awards Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Education awards, as well as specialist degrees and certificates. Each program in the school offers students the opportunity for graduate assistantships.

School of Continuing Education

Primarily intended for working professionals, the School of Continuing Education offers credit, non-credit and career training programs, courses and camps. Additionally, the school offers online courses and study abroad programs.
