Marshall University Admissions and General School Information

Accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Marshall University is one of the most recognizable public universities in the country. During the 2007-08 academic year, Marshall awarded nearly 2,500 degrees, a compilation of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, to its students.

About Marshall University

Marshall University boasts its all-American roots through its name and location. The school's name was derived from John Marshall, the fourth U.S. Supreme Court Justice and is situated in one of the original thirteen states, West Virginia. MU was founded in 1837 and originally called Marshall Academy. The college has seen significant growth since becoming a university in 1961, and as a result close to 14,000 students attend the school. Additionally, Marshall expanded its academic offerings to 68 bachelor degree programs and 52 graduate degree programs.

Marshall University is located in the mid-size city of Huntington, West Virginia, the second largest city in the state. Marshall University is also well known because of the 2006 film 'We Are Marshall.' The film is based on the true story of the airplane crash of Southern Airways flight 932 which carried 75 Marshall University football players, coaches, and team supporters.

Admissions and Enrollment Information

Like many colleges, Marshall enrolls first-time undergraduate students based on his or her completion of a high school diploma, eligible high school grade point average (GPA) and performance on college-based exams (ACT and SAT). Transfer students must submit official transcripts from each of the previous colleges they've attended and graduate students must show evidence of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university along with meeting minimum GPA and graduate exam requirements.

Lewis College of Business

The Lewis College of Business at Marshall University strives to help students gain an understanding about the many facets of business. Students enrolled in the college have multiple options for degree programs. Popular degree programs within the college include economics, accounting, international business and marketing.

College of Education & Human Services

Incorporated in 1867, the College of Education and Human Services is the oldest academic college at Marshall University. The college is comprised of four major divisions: School of Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Sports, and Recreation; Human Development & Allied Technology and the School of Education. The college offers 45 undergraduate, 36 graduate and two doctoral degree programs.

College of Fine Arts

Students enrolled in Marshall University's College of Fine Arts can major in art, design, music or theater. Students also have the opportunity to specialize in a specific area of study within their majors. Students are also encouraged to participate in exhibitions and performances that contribute to the creative community at MU.

College of Information Technology & Engineering

Marshall University's College of Information Technology and Engineering assists students who have an interest in high technology fields. The college offers traditional engineering programs such as the Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering as well as programs that are geared towards newer technology fields such as the Master of Science degree in Environmental Science. At CITE, students are encouraged to be innovators in their respective area of interest.

College of Liberal Arts

Modern Languages, Philosophy and Communication Studies are just a few of the many departments of the College of Liberal Arts at Marshall University. In addition to departments, the college also consists of programs and centers. These programs and centers such as the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Gender in Appalachia prepare students for professional work and allow students to participate in research opportunities.

College of Health Professions

Students interested in health profession careers at MU can choose from a diverse assortment of degree programs that are relevant to today's health professional. One of these degree programs is the Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging. The College of Health Professions is one of the largest academic colleges at Marshall University.

Honors College

Students must be invited to apply to enter the Honors College at Marshall University. The Honors College at MU signifies that students are completing or have completed an honors-designed curriculum. Graduation from the Honors College is more notable than graduating with honors recognition, which simply means a student has a competitive grade point average (GPA).

College of Science

With undergraduate and graduate degree programs such as Chemistry, Geology and Microbiology, the College of Science at MU prepares students for professional work in traditional science fields. The College of Science is grounded in undergraduate and graduate research. Participation in student research opportunities is encouraged.

W. Page Pitt School of Journalism + Mass Communication

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at MU exposes students to the complexities within professional media markets. Students are involved in hands-on experiences in the six areas of study within the school. These areas of study include online journalism, print, advertising, broadcast, radio television production and management and public relations.

Graduate College

The Graduate College at Marshall University offers degree programs at more than one campus location. The college has a multitude of master's and doctorate degree programs. Additionally, the college caters to graduate students who want to pursue a specialized graduate degree certificate or program such as the education specialist degree.

Graduate School of Education & Professional Development

The GSEPD enhances the professional development of mid-career education professionals. Many of its students are current educators and administrators who are working in a regional or state education district or agency. Popular degree programs within the GSEPD include the Master of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education, Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education, Master of Arts degree in Special Education and Master of Arts degree in Leadership Studies.

School of Extended Education

The SEE at Marshall University is comprised four regional centers. All of the centers are open to the general public and high school and college students who desire to achieve a college degree in an unconventional way. College-level courses are offered that can lead to an associate's, bachelor's or master's degree from MU.

Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine

The Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University prepares medical students to become innovators and leaders in respective healthcare specialties. Because of the school's location in West Virginia, JCESOM places a high value on teaching its students about health issues in rural areas. The school gives high attention to clinical and basic medical research that can help students understand the dichotomy of rural populations and healthcare.

University College

Like most university colleges, the UC at Marshall University functions as an advising college to students who are undecided in their choice of major. The college was founded in 1999 and also coordinates Marshall's tutoring programs. Moreover, the college contains helpful workshops such as the Math Workshop and helps students practice for placement tests in math and English.
