General Information About San Diego State University

Founded in 1897 as a college for teachers, San Diego State University (SDSU) has grown into one of California's largest and most active research universities. Today, SDSU is comprised of seven colleges offering 84 undergraduate degrees, 90 graduate degrees and 78 minors. Popular degree programs include nursing, international business, administration of justice, psychology and physical education.

SDSU also runs two satellite campuses in the Imperial Valley, 120 miles east of San Diego. These campuses specialize in undergraduate degree completion programs and offer several graduate and teacher certification training programs.

Admission and Enrollment Information for San Diego State University

Prospective freshmen applicants must submit an application, standardized test scores and high school transcript. The university typically requires that freshmen applicants complete four years of English, three years of mathematics, two years each of social science, as well as lab science, foreign language, art and elective coursework.

Students who transfer with at least 60 credits of coursework from a regional community college or other higher education institution are admitted as upper-division students. The Imperial Valley campus only admits undergraduates who have completed the first two years of an undergraduate degree curriculum.

Academic Divisions at San Diego State University

College of Arts and Letters

The largest academic unit of SDSU, the College of Arts and Letters represents more than a third of all degrees conferred at the university. Among the college's 19 departments, the most popular degree programs are in English, economics, international business, political science and sociology.

College of Business Administration

In addition to industry-standard Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Executive MBA programs, the College of Business Administration's undergraduate and graduate international business programs appear on the Top 25 list of U.S. News and World Report. Other program study areas include accounting, finance, information systems, management and marketing.

College of Education

Undergraduate studies in SDSU's College of Education includes majors in elementary education, secondary education, child development and minors in educational technology and counseling. Graduate and doctoral programs are offered in administration and rehabilitation, counseling and psychology, educational leadership, special education and teacher education.

College of Engineering

The College of Engineering offers degrees in numerous academic departments. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees are available in a number of engineering areas, including aerospace and engineering mechanics, civil, construction, computer engineering and mechanical engineering. The college also offers an engineering science doctoral program in conjunction with the University of California at San Diego and several institutes and research centers.

College of Health and Human Services

The College of Health and Human Services has programs leading to bachelor's and master's degrees, as well as Master of Public Health (MPH), Master of Social Work (MSW), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Language and Communicative Disorders, and Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) programs. The college is comprised of speech and language, nursing and social work schools, a department of gerontology and a graduate school of public health.

College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts

The 12 departments that make up the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts include technical, career and artistic fields. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered in naval science, tourism and hospitality, journalism, music, dance, theatre and aerospace studies.

College of Sciences

The hub of research activities at SDSU, the College of Sciences offers graduate, undergraduate and doctorate degrees in astronomy, homeland security, geology, chemistry and physics, as well as pre-professional programs in medicine, veterinary medicine and dentistry. Some of the college's most popular degree programs are psychology, computer science and biology.
