Aside from being the Northwest's largest university, The University of Washington is also one of the west coast's oldest universities. In 2008, UW placed 16th in the Academic Ranking Of World Universities list of the world's top universities.

? The University of Washington currently serves about 43,000 students, nearly 31,000 of which are undergraduates. The school has 3 campuses and its flagship campus is in Seattle's University District.

? UW was founded in 1861 and currently has a $1 billion research budget. It is also receives more federal research funding than any other school in the United States.

? !!!Admissions and Enrollment Information

? Prospective UW students are encouraged to apply using the school's online form. Once an application is submitted, students will have to send the university SAT and ACT scores and high school transcript. Freshman applicants are expected to have finished coursework in six core areas prior to enrollment. Most of these are completed in high school and include math, English, social sciences, art, a foreign language and a natural science. Once it is determined that these pre-requisites have been fulfilled, a student can then enroll in courses.

? UW's College of Arts and Sciences offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in the humanities, arts, social sciences and natural sciences. More than 6,000 classes are offered and about 23,000 students populate the school. The college's faculty generates over $85 million in research grants, both privately and publically funded.

? The College of Built Environments, formerly called the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, is made up of four departments. These departments, Architecture, Construction Management, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design & Planning house 2 Ph.D. programs as well as a handful of centers and institutes.

? The business school at UW was founded in 1917 and has close to 46,000 alumni. Each year, the school enrolls about 2,500 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs, which include degrees in accounting, business administration, marketing and technology management.

? The College of Education offers undergraduate, graduate and online certification programs in several areas. Elementary education, ESL, physical education, mathematics and science education and health education are all offered as potential courses of study. There are also specialized programs in educational policy studies, educational leadership and educational psychology.

? The University of Washington's College of Engineering boasts nearly 4,800 students, 4,000 of which are undergraduates. Departments within the college include Aeronautics, Civil Engineering, Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

? UW's unique College of the Environment enrolls approximately 1,200 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs. The school provides programs for students to develop foundational knowledge and research of environmental studies and includes departments devoted to aquatic sciences, climate change, environmental management, forestry and atmospheric studies. All of the school's programs award B.S. and M.S. degrees.

? Established in 1970, The School of Public Health consists of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Services, Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences and Global Health departments. It is also the only public health school in the Northwest. The school also offers programs in maternal and child health, international health, public health genetics and nutritional sciences,.

? The School of Law was first established in 1899 and boasts approximately 700 students divided amongst 118 faculty members. J.D., LL.M and Ph.D. degrees are offered and the school also has three legal publications: The Pacific Rim Law & Policy Journal, The Washington Law Review, and the web-based Shidler Journal of Law, Commerce & Technology.

? The University of Washington School of Medicine is the sole medical school in the states of Wyoming, Washington, Idaho, Alaska and Montana. It was established in 1946 and has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the nation's top primary-care medical school for 15 straight years. The School of Medicine also ranks as one of the top medical schools when it comes to receipt of federal researching funding, and is only second to Harvard Medical School in this area.
